Fernbank Museum of Natural History

Atlanta, Georgia

About

Fernbank Museum of Natural History sits at the edge of Fernbank Forest โ€” one of the largest remaining old-growth urban forests in the eastern United States โ€” in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. The museum brings together stunning natural science exhibits, a Giant Screen Theater, and extensive educational programs in a landmark building designed by Graham Gund. The museum's signature display is the Giants of the Mesozoic hall, featuring full-scale dinosaur models including Argentinosaurus โ€” the largest dinosaur ever discovered โ€” and Giganotosaurus. The Spectrum of the Senses, WildWoods, and A Walk Through Time in Georgia exhibits engage visitors with the region's natural and geological history through interactive displays and multimedia experiences. Fernbank Forest provides a rare opportunity to walk through authentic old-growth piedmont forest on maintained trails, experiencing the native plant and animal communities that once dominated the southeastern landscape. The forest is open to museum visitors and serves as a living laboratory for nature education. The Giant Screen Theater features IMAX-format films on natural history, science, and exploration topics, with programming for both school groups and the general public. Fernbank's NatureQuest exhibit is specifically designed for children under age eight, offering hands-on discovery in a nature-inspired environment. Fernbank runs Fernbank Camps year-round, including summer science camps for children ages 5โ€“12 that combine indoor exhibits with outdoor forest exploration. School group visits, homeschool programs, and scout badge programs round out an extensive educational offering.
