Field Museum

Chicago, Illinois

About

The Field Museum in Chicago is one of the largest and most significant natural history museums in the world, with a collection of more than 40 million specimens and artifacts spanning biology, anthropology, geology, and archaeology. Located on the Museum Campus along Lake Michigan, it has been a center of scientific research and public education since its founding in 1893 following the World's Columbian Exposition. Sue, one of the largest and most complete T. rex skeletons ever discovered, is a centerpiece of the museum's paleontology halls. The revamped Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet traces 4 billion years of life on Earth through fossils, dioramas, and interactive displays. The Ancient Egypt exhibit immerses visitors in the world of pharaohs and mummies, while Inside Ancient Egypt presents a 5,000-year-old tomb with genuine artifacts. The museum's anthropology collections are among the most comprehensive in the world, with significant holdings in Pacific cultures, Indigenous North and South American traditions, African heritage, and Asian civilizations. The Cyrus Tang Hall of China and the Regenstein Halls of the Pacific offer particularly deep engagement with living and historical cultures. The Field Museum operates as an active research institution, with scientists conducting fieldwork and publishing discoveries across biology, anthropology, and earth sciences. The Grainger Science Hub offers behind-the-scenes access to research collections and connects visitors with working scientists. Extensive programming for schools, homeschoolers, scouts, and families makes the museum a year-round learning destination. Field camps, sleepovers, and teacher workshops supplement the on-site experience.
