Heard Museum
About
The Heard Museum in Phoenix is one of the world's foremost institutions dedicated to the art, history, and cultures of Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest and beyond. Founded in 1929 by Dwight and Maie Heard, the museum has grown from a private collection into a nationally acclaimed cultural institution that presents Native American perspectives with depth, authenticity, and respect. The museum's 12 galleries house a permanent collection of extraordinary breadth, encompassing historic and contemporary Native American art, cultural artifacts, and living cultural expressions. The collection spans traditional pottery, jewelry, textiles, and baskets alongside contemporary paintings, sculpture, and multimedia works by Indigenous artists from across North America. The Heardlings Activity Room provides hands-on learning experiences designed specifically for children and families visiting the galleries. The Heard Museum is perhaps best known for its annual signature events: the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest, which draws competitors from across North America each February, and the Indian Fair & Market, one of the premier juried Native American art markets in the country. These events celebrate living Indigenous cultures and connect visitors directly with Native artists and performers. The museum's courtyard and outdoor spaces—shaded by mature trees and graced by fountains—provide a serene complement to the gallery experience. The Café and museum shop offer authentic Indigenous art, jewelry, and cultural items. The Heard is conveniently accessible by light rail, with free parking available on site.
