New York Botanical Garden
About
The New York Botanical Garden is one of the foremost botanical research and educational institutions in the world, occupying 250 acres of a National Historic Landmark in the Bronx. Founded in 1891, NYBG maintains living collections of more than 12,000 kinds of plants across a diverse array of garden environments, from formal rose and perennial gardens to native plant meadows, a 50-acre old-growth forest, and the largest Victorian-style glasshouse in the United States. The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory β a stunning 1902 cast-iron and glass structure β houses tropical, subtropical, and desert ecosystems under its ornate dome, providing visitors with access to plant worlds from across the globe year-round. Surrounding gardens include a children's adventure garden with hands-on plant science activities, a rock garden, a Japanese stone garden, and seasonal seasonal displays that draw visitors throughout the year. NYBG's scientific research program is among the most respected in the field of systematic botany and ecology. The garden's herbarium holds 7.8 million dried plant specimens used by researchers worldwide, and its Institute of Economic Botany supports research on the human uses of plants across global cultures. As an APGA Reciprocal Admissions Program member, individual members of participating public gardens receive free admission. The garden is accessible via Metro-North Railroad from Grand Central.
