North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

Raleigh, North Carolina

About

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh is the largest natural history museum in the Southeast and one of the most visited museums in the Carolinas. Admission is entirely free, making it an accessible destination for families, homeschoolers, and school groups year-round. The museum spans two connected buildings: the historic Main Building and the modern Nature Research Center. The Nature Research Center features four floors of working research labs where scientists conduct real studies, with viewing windows and interactive displays allowing visitors to observe science in action. The Daily Planet theater and the SECU Daily Planet sphere offer immersive programming on natural phenomena. Live animals are a highlight throughout the museum, including the Arthropod Zoo β€” home to cockroaches, millipedes, and other invertebrates β€” as well as live fish, reptiles, and birds. The Living Conservatory houses free-flying butterflies and other animals in a lush indoor habitat. Beyond the main campus, the museum operates Prairie Ridge Ecostation, an outdoor nature center on a restored piedmont prairie where visitors can explore native habitats, observe wildlife, and participate in citizen science activities. The site hosts regular programming connecting learners to local ecology. The museum offers robust educational programming including school field trips, homeschool days, summer camps, and teacher professional development. Its commitment to free admission and community science makes it one of the most equitable science learning institutions in the region.
