Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
About
The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has served its community since 1916, making it one of the oldest natural history museums in the American West. Situated in a Mission Revival complex along the edge of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in the Mission Canyon neighborhood, the museum holds more than 3 million specimens and objects across natural history and Chumash cultural collections. The museum's Chumash archaeology and ethnology collections are among the most important in California, documenting the culture and history of the Chumash people who have inhabited the Santa Barbara Channel region for thousands of years. The collections span stone tools, shell beads, baskets, rock art documentation, and human osteological materials—presented with ongoing Chumash community consultation. The Hall of Natural History covers California botany, geology, ornithology, and mammalogy, with particular depth in the endemic species of the Channel Islands ecosystem. The Gladwin Planetarium offers daily digital dome shows on astronomy topics for all ages. The seasonal Butterflies Alive! exhibit releases hundreds of live butterflies—mostly native California species—into an outdoor flight enclosure where visitors can observe feeding, resting, and flight behavior up close. The museum's satellite facility, the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf, provides a marine education center focused on the Santa Barbara Channel's kelp forest and island ecosystems, including touch tanks and live animal displays. Education programs include school field trips, homeschool programs and resources, nature camps, and family programs throughout the year. The museum is free to children 2 and under, and SNAP/CalFresh cardholders receive discounted admission.
