Strawbery Banke Museum
About
Strawbery Banke Museum occupies ten acres of Portsmouth's historic South End neighborhood, the same ground where the city was first settled in 1630. Rather than relocating buildings, the museum preserves its historic houses in place, allowing visitors to walk through a neighborhood that layers four centuries of continuous habitation. Costumed interpreters bring specific moments in history alive through immersive roleplay, while traditional craftspeople demonstrate period trades. Heirloom gardens planted with historically appropriate varieties connect the site to agricultural history. The museum interprets Indigenous history through colonial contact, colonial settlement, maritime commerce, and 20th-century urban neighborhood life.
