Colby College Museum of Art
About
The Colby College Museum of Art has grown since its 1959 founding into a major cultural institution, now comprising five wings and more than 38,000 square feet of gallery space on the Colby campus in Waterville. The permanent collection of nearly 8,000 works centers on American art, with particular depth in 19th- and 20th-century painting, works on paper, and contemporary art. Special collections include the sole repository of Terry Winters's complete print archive, one of the largest holdings of James McNeill Whistler prints outside of the Smithsonian, and more than 800 works by Alex Katz. The LEED Silverβcertified Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion (2013) completed the museum's circuit of wings with new galleries, a sculpture terrace, classrooms, and a glass-enclosed stairwell featuring a monumental Sol LeWitt wall drawing. The sculpture court outside houses Richard Serra's 4-5-6 and works by other major contemporary artists. The museum functions simultaneously as a public destination and a teaching resource, bringing thousands of Maine Kβ12 students to campus each year through school and field-trip programming. Admission is always free. Gallery hours run Tuesday through Saturday 10 amβ5 pm and Sunday noonβ5 pm, with Thursday evening hours until 9 pm from September through May.
