Julie Bogart attended UCLA (B.A. in History, 1983) and later earned a Master's in Theology from Xavier University (2007). After homeschooling all five of her children, she created the Brave Writer program โ an innovative approach to teaching writing that emphasizes voice, joy, and the natural rhythms of a literate household. She received Xavier's 2017 Madges Award for Outstanding Service to Society. Her writing philosophy draws on Charlotte Mason, Reggio Emilia, and her own deeply observational approach to how children develop as writers and thinkers.
Key Ideas
- โWriting should be taught through relationship, not correction โ the parent's job is to be the child's first enthusiastic reader
- โA 'brave writer' is one who risks sharing their inner world; that courage must be protected, not graded
- โEnchantment and curiosity are the preconditions for deep learning โ create an atmosphere before assigning curriculum
- โThe Four Stages of Writing Development help parents meet children where they are without pushing developmental readiness
- โHomeschooling works best when families find their own natural rhythms rather than replicating school-at-home
