Staten Island Children's Museum
About
Staten Island Children's Museum is located within the grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, a 19th-century Greek Revival complex that served as the first publicly funded sailors' retirement home in the United States. This unique setting — a designated New York City Landmark with stunning Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture surrounded by gardens and parkland — gives the museum an architectural context unlike any other children's museum in the city. The museum serves children roughly ages 1 through 10, with exhibits and programs designed to support learning through active play, sensory exploration, and hands-on creativity. Its galleries explore themes from insect life and natural science to engineering and artistic expression, all through materials and experiences accessible to the very young. The surrounding Snug Harbor grounds extend the museum experience into a remarkable outdoor environment of lawns, gardens, and historically significant buildings. Staten Island Children's Museum operates as a community anchor for a borough that is often overlooked in the context of New York City's cultural landscape. As an ACM Reciprocal Network member, members of participating children's museums receive benefits upon visiting. The museum is accessible from Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, which is itself a free and scenic experience.
