Louisiana Children's Museum
About
Louisiana Children's Museum reopened in 2019 in a spectacular new home within New Orleans City Park, replacing its downtown location of 30 years with a 60,000-square-foot campus that seamlessly blends indoor exhibits with 8.5 acres of curated outdoor learning landscape. The design by Mithun Architects was guided by the museum's philosophy that outdoor environments are as important to child development as indoor gallery spaces. The museum's outdoor grounds include a Mississippi River and delta water play area that teaches the physics and ecology of the river system that defines Louisiana, a nature-based play zone with natural materials and loose parts, gardens growing Gulf Coast native plants, and open meadow spaces for movement and discovery. The indoor galleries extend these themes: the Our Louisiana exhibit connects children to the state's diverse ecosystems—bayou, prairie, coastal marsh, and pine forest—through immersive sensory environments and animal encounters. The Louisiana ABC Café teaches nutrition and cooking science in a child-scaled kitchen restaurant. The museum's science galleries include a Bubble Studio, physics-based exhibits on motion and forces, and a maker space with art and engineering challenges. The cultural programming reflects New Orleans's extraordinary heritage, with exhibits and events connected to music, food traditions, and Mardi Gras culture. ACM and ASTC reciprocal membership is honored, and the museum offers a Museums for All reduced admission program. The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday. Education programs include class visits, after-school programs, and special events throughout the year.
