Space Center Houston
About
Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, located on the JSC campus in the Clear Lake area southeast of Houston. Since 1992, it has served as the gateway to America's human spaceflight program, offering visitors an unprecedented close-up experience with the people, hardware, and history of NASA's manned missions. The centerpiece exhibits include the actual Apollo 17 command module (the last Apollo spacecraft to return from the Moon), a full-sized Space Shuttle replica called Independence, and the Saturn V Gallery—one of the most remarkable spaces in any American museum. The Saturn V Gallery houses a complete, flight-ready Saturn V rocket laid horizontally in a climate-controlled building, allowing visitors to walk the full 363-foot length of the rocket that carried astronauts to the Moon. The museum's collection also includes spacesuits, scientific instruments, and personal artifacts from astronauts across six decades of space exploration. Tram tours take visitors into the active Johnson Space Center campus, passing the historic Mission Control room used during the Apollo missions and the current training facilities where astronauts prepare for ISS missions. The tours stop at the Saturn V Gallery and Rocket Park, where additional rockets from the Mercury, Gemini, and early Space Shuttle era are displayed outdoors. Space Center Houston offers robust education programs including homeschool events, school field trips aligned to STEM standards, astronaut-in-training camp programs, and overnight sleepovers inside the museum. It is an ASTC Passport Program member and a Smithsonian Institution affiliate.
