Science Museum of Virginia
About
The Science Museum of Virginia, housed in the historic Broad Street Station, is Richmond's flagship science and technology destination. The grand Beaux-Arts building—once a train station—now welcomes visitors to 223,000 square feet of interactive science exploration spanning the physical and life sciences, technology, engineering, and the arts. At the heart of the museum is The Dome, one of the largest screens in Richmond and nearly a quarter-acre in size, presenting planetarium shows, fulldome films, and live science demonstrations. Adjacent to The Dome is Science on a Sphere®, a room-sized display that uses high-resolution video projectors to depict planetary data, climate patterns, and global phenomena. The Forge is the museum's makerspace, where visitors design, build, and prototype using tools ranging from hand tools to digital fabrication equipment. The museum's ecology, animal, and art labs offer rotating hands-on programming, while keeper talks and live science shows—including the beloved rat basketball demonstration—run throughout each day. The museum's Group Visits program specifically supports homeschool families with curriculum-aligned field trips, guided programs, and a dedicated homeschool day. The Camp-In overnight experience lets families and school groups sleep among the exhibits for an unforgettable science-immersed evening. Digital Demo programs extend the museum's reach to remote classrooms across Virginia.
