Liberty Science Center
About
Liberty Science Center sits in Liberty State Park on the New Jersey waterfront, offering dramatic views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty while serving as New Jersey's premier hands-on science center. Since opening in 1993, the center has established itself as one of the most significant science education institutions in the greater New York metropolitan area, accessible to a population of millions across northern New Jersey and New York City. The center's exhibits span a broad range of scientific disciplines — from the physics of forces and motion to the biology of the human body, the ecology of New Jersey's coastal environment, and the science of communication and technology. The Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium, one of the largest domed IMAX screens in the world, presents digital sky shows and giant-screen films that take visitors from the local night sky to the far reaches of the cosmos. Liberty Science Center's educational philosophy emphasizes accessible, inquiry-based learning for all audiences. Its programming for families extends to dedicated Home School Workshops — structured science sessions that combine curriculum-aligned activities with free exploration time in the exhibits. The center also offers outreach programs that can be delivered to homeschool co-ops and community groups. As an ASTC Travel Passport Program member, members of qualifying out-of-region science centers receive reciprocal free or reduced admission. The center is accessible from Manhattan via the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail from the Exchange Place PATH station.
