Witte Museum
About
The Witte Museum has anchored San Antonio's cultural life since 1926, occupying a beautifully landscaped campus along the San Antonio River in Brackenridge Park. Consistently ranked as San Antonio's best museum, the Witte brings together Texas natural history, wildlife, science, and cultural heritage under one roof, guided by the theme of 'Deep Time'—the idea that understanding Texas's past illuminates its present and future. The Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery is the centerpiece of the museum's natural history holdings, transporting visitors 110 million years back to the Cretaceous Period to encounter the extraordinary animals—both well-known and obscure—that once roamed what is now Texas. The McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery features more than 150 taxidermied Texas animals in immersive diorama environments that recreate the state's diverse ecosystems, from the Rio Grande Valley to the Panhandle Plains. The Witte's cultural collections span 19,000 years of South Texas history, including one of the world's most significant collections of Lower Pecos rock art. The museum's Lower Pecos Canyonlands programs bring these ancient pictographs to life through gallery exhibits and optional guided tours to the White Shaman Preserve. Education programs include STEAM Sunday family events, school field trips with curriculum support, summer camps, and outreach programs. The Witte participates in the ASTC Passport Program, granting members reciprocal admission at hundreds of science centers nationwide, and is a Smithsonian Institution affiliate. Free general admission is available every Tuesday from 3–6pm for Bexar County residents.
