Discovery Place Science
About
Discovery Place Science anchors Charlotte's science education landscape as one of the Southeast's most celebrated hands-on science museums. Located in uptown Charlotte, the museum has earned recognition from National Geographic as a top-10 science museum destination and from U.S. News as the third-best attraction in Charlotte. The museum's centerpiece is the IMAX Dome theater, the largest movie screen in the Carolinas, presenting nature documentaries and science films in breathtaking immersive format. Nearby, the Digistar 7 Planetarium delivers state-of-the-art digital star shows and astronomy presentations. KidScience serves children ages 7 and under with developmentally appropriate discovery spaces, including a water table, construction zone, and art studio. World Alive houses a diverse collection of living animals—reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates—with keeper presentations and up-close encounters throughout the day. The Thinker Space maker studio on Level 1 invites visitors to design, build, and tinker with hands-on fabrication tools. Science at the Stage live demonstrations and Cool Stuff physics shows run throughout each visit, bringing dramatic science moments to audiences of all ages. Discovery Place Science has been consistently recognized by Charlotte Parent magazine as a Best Bet for Homeschool Field Trips, and the museum offers dedicated curriculum-aligned programming for homeschool groups visiting on weekdays.
