Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum
About
Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum occupies Hangar 1 at the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, a cavernous 1930s-era brick and steel structure that once housed the Eighth Air Force and later served as a training facility for Air Force crews. The building itself is a National Historic Landmark, and its soaring interior provides the dramatic space needed to display full-scale military and experimental aircraft. The museum's collection includes more than 50 aircraft covering the full arc of aviation history, from a Wright Brothers-era biplane reproduction to Cold War jets, experimental aircraft, and Space Age vehicles. Highlights include a B-1A Lancer, an SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft (one of only 32 ever built), and a replica of the Apollo 11 command module. Many aircraft are displayed with cockpits open for children to climb into, making it a favorite hands-on destination for young aviation enthusiasts. The museum also operates Exploration of Flight at Centennial Airport, 20 miles south of Denver, where visitors can watch gliders, ultralights, and general aviation aircraft operate from an active runway. Weekend programs at both locations include flight simulators, pilot Q&A sessions, and guided tours. Wings Over the Rockies offers STEM education programs for school groups and is a Denver CityPASS destination. Summer camps, overnight programs, and youth aviation clubs round out the education calendar.
