Bronx Zoo
About
The Bronx Zoo, operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), is the largest metropolitan zoo in the country and one of the most significant zoological institutions in the world. Spanning 265 acres in the Bronx, the zoo is home to more than 4,000 individual animals representing approximately 650 species, housed in immersive habitats designed to reflect the ecological contexts of their wild counterparts. WCS operates the Bronx Zoo not merely as a public attraction but as the public face of a global conservation science organization. The society manages wildlife programs in more than 60 countries, and the work of those field scientists informs everything from exhibit design to animal care protocols at the zoo. Visitors encounter this connection throughout โ exhibits regularly frame the animals on display in terms of the conservation challenges their wild populations face. The zoo's Congo Gorilla Forest, Tiger Mountain, African Plains, and Sea Bird Colony exhibit are among the most celebrated habitat recreations in any zoo in the world. The zoo also houses a significant reptile house, a world-class aquatic bird collection, and the Wild Asia Monorail โ a narrated tour over a large free-ranging Asian mammal habitat. As an AZA-accredited institution, the Bronx Zoo participates in rigorous standards for animal care and conservation. Participating AZA member institutions may offer reciprocal admission benefits โ verify with your home institution.
