About

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo occupies a dramatic site at 6,800 feet elevation in the Rockies just above Colorado Springs, making it the only mountain zoo in the United States. Founded in 1926 and celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026, the zoo has grown into one of the most highly regarded in the country โ€” named the #2 Best Zoo in the US by USA TODAY 10Best in 2026. The zoo is home to more than 750 animals representing over 170 species, spread across habitats that take full advantage of the mountain terrain. Guests can hand-feed giraffes from an elevated deck (the zoo maintains the largest giraffe herd in the US), meet budgies in a free-flight aviary, and observe African elephants, grizzly bears, amur tigers, and Humboldt penguins up close. Every paid admission includes a $0.75 contribution to the zoo's wildlife conservation fund, which collectively generates nearly $500,000 per year for wild animal conservation programs around the globe. AZA-accredited, the zoo places strong emphasis on conservation education and animal welfare. Families with young children will find a carousel, miniature train, and dedicated play areas. The zoo offers school group programs, birthday packages, and seasonal events including the popular Electric Safari holiday light show.
