Philadelphia Zoo
About
Philadelphia Zoo holds the distinction of being the first zoo in the United States, chartered in 1859 and opened to the public in 1874. Across 42 Victorian-era acres in Fairmount Park, the zoo houses more than 1,300 animals representing hundreds of species, with collections that span great cats, primates, reptiles, birds, and large mammals. The zoo is best known in the contemporary era for its Zoo360 network โ an innovative system of overhead mesh trails and crossings that allow animals to move freely between different areas of the zoo and above visitor pathways. This approach transforms the typical zoo visit by allowing animals to initiate their own exploration, often bringing them to unexpected heights and locations that provide visitors with uniquely intimate encounters. The zoo's Victorian architecture and landscape design are themselves historically significant, and its proximity to other Fairmount Park cultural institutions makes it a natural part of a broader West Philadelphia cultural itinerary. Conservation and research programs are integrated into the zoo's public mission, with visible connections to global wildlife challenges. As an AZA-accredited institution, Philadelphia Zoo participates in rigorous standards for animal care and conservation. Participating AZA member institutions may offer reciprocal admission benefits โ verify with your home institution.
